Ready to play SM West Boys soccer fall ‘13? Tryouts will run 5:00 – 7:00pm for 9/10 grades & 6:30- 8:30 pm for 11/12 grades on Mon., Aug. 19, 2013! School starts on Monday, August 12, 2013 for Freshmen only.

What you should know ~

Program:  We currently plan to offer 3 teams: Varsity, Junior Varsity, and a C (Sophomore/ Freshman) Team. Team roster sizes vary from 17 to 21, with total program involvement being approximately 60 student/athletes.  All students/athletes should note that there is the chance of cutting participants at all grade levels. Any and all cuts are made by Friday, Aug. 23, 2013. You’ll need to be at your best at tryouts!

Tryouts: Tryouts begin Monday, August 19. Tryouts will begin in the evening from 5:00-8:30pm. Bring running and soccer shoes daily to all sessions.  Prospective student/athletes will be judged in the order of academic eligibility, attitude, coach ability, teamwork, physical conditioning, and individual technique.  Physical conditioning is a major part of tryouts. All prospective varsity student/athletes MUST  demonstrate the ability to run the two-mile in 12 minutes as well as other fitness tests.  Two-mile time credit will be given to students who prepare for the season by attending the summer camps and weights program.  Example: Those boys participating in the “Boot Camp” (Blue Valley Recreation Commission Soccer Conditioning Camp) from August 12-16 will be given 10 seconds of  2 mile credit per each day of Boot Camp. You have the right to tryout, however, it is an earned privilege to make the team!

Important Reminders:  1) To be eligible in August, a student MUST have passed at least 5 classes in the last grading period ending in May.  2) No student/athlete is allowed to tryout without a properly signed physical examination form ( http://www.kshsaa.org/Public/PDF/FORM-PPE.pdf  )submitted to Coach Wetmore either in person or mailed to his home.  DON’T WAIT!  2013-2014 school year physicals may be completed as early as May 1st, and must be received NO LATER than Fri., Aug. 16th.  If a student who attended West in Spring 2013 turns in the physical form on 8/19 he will sit out the first day of tryouts.  3) All athletes must purchase an Activity Ticket (approximately $35) at registration in August.4) Register your e-mail, sign up for text alerts and check the hotline or web site frequently.

Summer Conditioning:  Off-season is the time to build the player, in-season we build the team!  I expect that any player hoping to play Viking soccer  will be attending the Team Camp from May 28- 31 and the Boot Camp from August 12-16  http://www.bluevalleyrec.org/d/Youth_Sports/MISC/HSsoccer.pdf.  Summer Weights will run from June 3 - July 11 (see schedule and form at link for registrations and handouts on web site) and is also recommended. Please communicate with me if you have any conflicts.  The Team Camp is for potential West players only.  It will be at SM West (see form) and provides an excellent opportunity to prepare for the fall. Coach-led workouts at West will be on Tues. & Thurs. 9:30-10:30am from June 4-July 18. These sessions will follow the weights workout & help supplement the necessary soccer technique & conditioning needed to be an effective player.  The “Boot Camp” is run by the Blue Valley Recreation Commission in conjunction with other high schools. It brings our team together for a final week of preparation just before tryouts in an excellent competitive environment. Don’t miss these opportunities!  Summer preparation should also include daily individual conditioning and technique training, other camps or clinics, pickup and organized games, skill training with both feet, attacking and defending skills, study of the game-e.g. MLS, videos, books, etc., and improving your mental toughness as a competitor in any team sport. Challenge yourself!! Improve as a person and player. Plan to daily invest: Average of running 2 miles; 30-45 minute average of ball skills w/both feet; Creative and intense conditioning incorporating “game speed”. Got Viking Vision?
